What exactly are the best foods to eat 
to obtain the 40g per day??

High Fiber Foods:

Grain Products:

  • whole grain breads, buns, bagels, muffins
  • Bran Flakes, All Bran, bran Buds, Corn bran, 100% Bran and Fiber 1, shredded wheats
  • Cooked cereal such as Red River and Oat Bran
  • whole-wheat pastas
  • whole grains such as barley, popcorn, corn and brown rice

Fruits:

  • dried fruits such as apricots, dates, prunes and raisins
  • berries such as blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries
  • oranges, apple with skin, avocado, kiwi, mango and pear

Vegetables:

  • broccoli, spinach, swiss chard, green peas and other dark green leafy vegetables
  • dried peas and beans such as kidney beans, lima beans, black-eyed beans, chick peas and lentils

Nuts and Seeds:

  • nuts and seeds such as almonds, whole flaxseedand soynuts

Here are typical high fiber foods along with the approximate number of grams of fiber they contain. Food quantity of 1/2 cup unless otherwise noted:


Best High Fiber Dinner Ideas: Chili & Split-pea soup

  • Pears, 5 grams- 1 medium
  • Beans, 5-7 grams- kidney beans, baked beans, black beans, pinto beans, garbanzos
  • Berries, 2 grams- strawberries, raspberries, blackberries
  • Bran Cereals, 5-10 grams- All-Bran, Bran Buds, 100% Bran, Raisin Bran
  • Spaghetti, whole-wheat, 3 grams
  • Bananas, 3 grams - medium 8" long
  • Bread, 4-5 grams - 2 slices whole-wheat, rye
  • Oatmeal, 2 grams
  • Brussels Sprouts, 2 grams
  • Carrots, 3-4 grams, 2 medium
  • Dried Figs, 4 grams, 2 figs
  • Apple, 3 grams, 1 medium
  • Lentils, 8 grams
  • Lima Beans, 7 grams
  • Green Peas, 5 grams
  • Regular Potatoes (with skin), 4-5 grams - medium
  • Corn, 2 grams

I tried Pearl Barley last week...nice nutty flavor. mixed in a few black beans  was a yummy side dish packed with fiber!!

1/2 cup Barley 3 grams

1/8 cup Black beans 1.75 grams

1/8 cup chopped cooked carrot .5 grams

dash of my favorite Tuscan spice mix


about 80 calories...  very filling and colorful
