Carrie's Story... Thoughts on "IT"

Thoughts on “IT" written September 21, 2007

I was 42 years old, 213-pound OBESE 5 foot 6-inch mom of three. I did not want to go to the doctor because I knew what she would tell me.  That I was in the AT RISK group for my age and weight for serious health problems. My husband had already been told this and that was awful enough to hear.  On my own, I was able to shed 10 pounds. This was humbling since I really tried most every exercise program out there with no REAL results. As a family, we cut back on our eating out, fast food, soda and fatty foods. We got a dog that needed walks to keep happy and healthy. This got us moving almost 4 years ago. I was still a yo yo with my weight. Still very depressed, high cholesterol, irregular monthly cycles, stressed, never happy with myself…. so you guessed it no one else was happy either!  I saw my husband make dramatic changes in his eating habits with my help. I saw him do the treadmill, lift weights, and started to work out with the kids at GOeFAST SAQ on Sundays a year and a half ago. So in August of 2006 at the age of 44 and still weighing 203 pounds at the doctors office, yes I did go to the doctor and got “the talk” heard the words and decided to “Just Do IT” whatever “IT” was I needed to do it soon. There was no denying that I was not fit, I was FAT. The first Sunday session of SAQ, I went to was the hardest thing I have ever done, or so I thought.  On September 6, 2006, my journey towards a healthy lifestyle began with GOeFAST Ladies Fitness Program. After a week of working out, I am sure Coach Lou was questioning whether he wanted to continue offering the program. I had what I now refer to as my own private meltdown in front of the whole group. I arrived crying and left crying. Coach Lou kept me moving that day and now I knew what “IT” was that I needed to do. I set my one-year goals and got  RESULTS with the help of GOeFAST Ladies Fitness Program. I now had a plan.

I have been asked if it was hard. YES, it is hard. I spent many times after working out just soaking and hoping to heal in time for the next workout. I have cried more times, just the hormones realigning. I now have regular cycles, am less stressed, have the confidence that I CAN DO exercise and healthy living. I am not depressed. I do not feel deprived of any food that I need to fuel my body. I found a fitness coach that motivated me beyond what I thought I could do before and a fitness program that works! I have worked my buns off this year and the doctor is proud of my transformation. I went in this week for my physical and weighed 167 on the doctor’s scale. I love the new life that I have chosen. I have had the support of my family and the motivation of Coach Lou to help me through the rough times and celebrate the good times.

“If you want something you have never had, you have to do something you have never done.”

This has gotten me through those days where my body has been pushed in new directions. I look forward to working out. I enjoy being pushed to new heights. I have gained new respect for myself. I am a 45-year-old, 167-pound, getting fit mom now. I have spent most of my life living for others and neglecting myself. However, I realized that I needed to get healthy. A benefit of this fitness program is that I’ve been able to set a good example for my children. I’ve showed them that if you work hard at something, you can achieve your goals.

If I can do “IT”, so can you. Take “IT” one day at a time, one exercise at a time… just take that first step and the rest will come with some good old fashioned hard work in the park!

“IT” is not easy. “IT” will get you FIT!
